Ask the Authors
When did you get the idea to write the story?
We went the summer of 2021. It was actually our 10 year anniversary trip the 11th year. We had to cancel because of Covid the year before. It was like Covid didn’t exist though! It was so “normal” and refreshing! It was such a special memory for us.
What made you decide to write the book?
We have two daughters and were shopping for souvenirs to bring home to them. We had joked all week about why the chickens crossed the road. We kept looking for that book in gift shops and we couldn’t find it!
Did you plan to write this book before going on your trip?
No! We had discussed and made the decision that I, Lindsay, was going to start writing and illustrating full time on the trip. I was a teacher and writing was still only a dream when we went on the trip. We didn’t get the idea to write the book until the end of the trip. We didn’t write it immediately though. Two books were published before this one.
How did you decide what to include in the story?
There are so many places to visit! We did most of what is in the book. We really did go on a dolphin watch with a dog on the boat! We rode bicycles all week. We only visited one restaurant twice. It was La Grignote. We love, love, loved it! We went to Fort Zachary Park, The Butterfly Museum and The Southernmost Point. There were so many things to include! We could easily write another book with so many more attractions that we didn’t include.
What else do you love about Key West?
There is music everywhere! When you walk down the road, you will pass by multiple outdoor restuarants and bars with live music. We loved that! It wasn’t just at night either…it’s all hours of the day! We went to see the Durt Bags twice at Durty Harry’s. They were phenomenal!!
You self-publish. What does that look like?
Amazon has a platform called “Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).” It is a platform where regular people with dreams of writing can publish their book without going the traditional route. We did a lot of learning and trial and error, but we are very proud of how it turned out in the end! If you have a dream to self-publish, do it! You CAN!
Can you help me self-publish my book?
Yes! This is not something that either of us are trained to do. We don’t have backgrounds in art, journalism, writing, graphic design, editing or anything! But…there is information available and if you are willing to learn, you can do it too! I’ve learned a lot and would love to share what I know…and save you some time! Send me a message at Lindsay@HisLittleLightOfMine.com or use the contact page. I’d love to help you achieve your dream because let me tell you…IT IS FUN and most definitely doable! :)
